Winter Skin Problems: Cracked Heels, Fissures & Dry Feet in December
As soon as the weather cools and home heaters start running, foot skin changes dramatically. December is the beginning of “heel fissure season,” when dry, thick, splitting skin becomes painful and even prone to infection. Patients with diabetes or neuropathy are at particularly high risk.
Why Skin Gets So Dry in Winter
1. Cold Outdoor Air + Dry Indoor Heat
Cold air holds less moisture. Heating systems then pull moisture from the skin, especially the heels, which naturally have thicker, drier skin compared to other areas of the body.
2. Hot Showers
Long, hot showers evaporate the skin’s natural oils, worsening dryness.
3. Open-Back Shoes & Slippers
Without a back strap, the heel expands and “splays” with each step. This stretching motion deepens cracks.
4. Callus Accumulation
Thick calluses trap dryness and eventually split, creating fissures that may bleed.
Common Winter Foot-Skin Conditions
Heel fissures (painful cracks at the back or edges of the heel)
Dry, flaky skin across the sole
Itchy winter dermatitis
Callus buildup at the heels and big toe
Eczema flare-ups, especially in diabetic or neuropathic feet
Treatment & Prevention Tips
Moisturize nightly with a urea-based cream:
Urea (10–40%) deeply hydrates and softens thick skin while supporting healthy turnover.
Wear socks after applying lotion:
This “occlusion method” helps the moisturizer absorb better and prevents slipping on floors.
Avoid walking barefoot at home:
Barefoot walking encourages callus buildup and heel splaying.
Exfoliate gently:
Use a pumice stone or foot file 2–3 times per week. Never use razors or sharp tools at home.
Switch to cooler, shorter showers:
Warm—not hot—water reduces dehydration of the skin.
When to see a podiatrist:
– Cracks that bleed or are extremely painful
– Signs of infection (redness, warmth, drainage)
– Calluses that keep coming back
– If you have diabetes and notice any skin breakdown
