Dry, Cracked Heels This Summer? Here's How to Heal Them

Flip-flop season is here—and so are dry, cracked heels. If your heels are rough, flaky, or even painful, you’re not alone. Summertime is peak season for heel fissures (that’s the medical term), and they can be more than just a cosmetic concern.

Why Do Heels Crack in the Summer?

  • Open-back shoes (like flip-flops) allow moisture to escape and increase friction.

  • Barefoot walking on hot pavement or pool decks can dry out the skin.

  • Dehydration and sun exposure don’t help either!

  • Calluses build up and crack when the skin loses flexibility.

And if you have conditions like diabetes, eczema, or psoriasis, cracked heels can become serious if left untreated.

What You Can Do to Help

1. Moisturize Daily
Use a thick heel cream or urea-based cream at night. For best results, apply before bed and wear cotton socks to lock in moisture.

2. Exfoliate Gently
Use a pumice stone or foot file a few times a week—never peel or cut the skin yourself.

3. Avoid Going Barefoot
Stick to supportive sandals or shoes with a back to reduce heel pressure and friction.

4. Stay Hydrated
Drinking water helps your skin from the inside out.

5. Don’t Ignore Pain or Bleeding
If your heels are cracked deeply, bleeding, or showing signs of infection, it’s time to see a podiatrist.
