Boomerangs, Burnt Toes & the Battle for Happy Feet: Surviving a Day at Sunsplash Roseville

Boomerangs, Burnt Toes & the Battle for Happy Feet: Surviving a Day at Sunsplash Roseville

There I was, feet blazing, heart racing, and halfway through Boomerang, my favorite ride at Sunsplash Roseville, when it hit me: this was a full-on foot hazard zone in disguise as a family-fun paradise.

Don’t get me wrong, the slides are amazing, the kids are happy, and the Iceberg ice Cream? Worth it. But after a sun-soaked day of walking on hot cement and splashing through communal water, my feet were screaming for mercy. As a podiatrist, I knew better, but I still forgot my water shoes. Rookie move.

So, whether you’re visiting with the family or chasing thrills like me, here’s your foot survival guide for a day at Sunsplash:

Hot Cement = Blister City

The pavement at water parks can reach dangerously high temperatures—think over 120°F on a sunny day. That’s enough to cause burns and blisters within minutes, especially if you’re dealing with:

  • Metatarsalgia (pain in the ball of the foot—yes, ouch)

  • Plantar fasciitis

  • Or any general foot sensitivity

Pro Tip: Bring a pair of water shoes with grippy soles. Flip-flops might slide or fall off on the rides, and going barefoot? A terrible idea.

Neuropathy? Double the Danger

If you have diabetic neuropathy or any condition that affects sensation in your feet, the danger multiplies. You might not feel burns or cuts right away—which can quickly turn into serious infections.

Take this seriously: You need protective, snug water shoes. And check your feet thoroughly afterward.

Fungal Jungle: Protect Against Infections

Warm water, wet pavement, and shared showers = perfect storm for athlete’s foot, plantar warts, and nail fungus.

  • Always rinse off after using public areas.

  • Dry your feet thoroughly (don’t forget between the toes!).

  • Spray on antifungal powder or wear moisture-wicking socks after.

Water Shoes: The Unsung Heroes

Don’t just bring them—wear them. The right pair will:

  • Protect against burns, cuts, and germs

  • Offer arch support (yes, some actually do!)

  • Keep your footing steady while climbing ride stairs

Look for pairs labeled “aqua shoes” or “water sport shoes” with quick-dry fabric and rubber soles.

When to Call the Foot Doc

If your feet are red, blistered, cracked, or you see any sign of infection after your Sunsplash visit, don’t tough it out. We’re here to help.

So yes, Boomerang is still the best ride—but your feet shouldn’t have to suffer for it. Pack your water shoes, protect your soles, and enjoy the park safely.
