Happy Feet, Happy Weekend: Foot Care & Shoe Tips for Memorial Day Adventures

Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial kickoff to summer — a glorious mix of barbecues, beach trips, hikes, parades, and poolside lounging. But with all that activity, your feet can go from “ready to rock” to “call the podiatrist” faster than you can say “who brought the potato salad?”

Whether you're hiking in the hills, chasing kids at a cookout, or dancing barefoot on a boat deck (you rebel), here’s how to keep your feet happy — and in one piece — all weekend long.

1. Choose the Right Shoe for the Right Activity

Not all shoes are created equal. That pair of worn-out sneakers from 2011 might still “technically” be intact, but if you're planning on walking, running, or playing, your feet deserve better.

  • Hiking or nature walks? Choose well-fitted hiking shoes or trail runners with good grip and ankle support.

  • Beach days? Go for sandals with arch support. Flip-flops are fine for short strolls, but long walks in them are a fast track to heel pain.

  • Barbecues and outdoor games? Sneakers or supportive slip-ons work best. Bonus if they're easy to clean when ketchup inevitably lands on them.

  • Water activities? Water shoes are your friend. They protect your soles from hot sand, sharp rocks, and mystery lake debris.

2. Keep Those Feet Clean (and Dry)

Moisture is the enemy. Whether it’s from sweat, river splashes, or spilled soda, damp feet can lead to blisters, irritation, or a full-blown foot funk.

  • Pack an extra pair of socks if you’re out all day.

  • Use foot powder if your feet get sweaty.

  • Dry your feet well after swimming before slipping into shoes.

3. Prevent Blisters Before They Happen

The only souvenir you don’t want from the weekend? A blister the size of a silver dollar.

  • Break in new shoes before the weekend.

  • Use blister prevention tape or pads on known hot spots.

  • Carry a small first-aid kit with bandages and antiseptic — because someone (probably you) will need it.

4. Don’t Forget the Sunscreen… for Your Feet

Yes, your feet can get sunburned — and yes, it's every bit as miserable as it sounds.

  • Apply sunscreen to the tops of your feet if they’ll be exposed.

  • Reapply after swimming, sweating, or chasing your runaway flip-flop down the beach.

5. Stretch and Rest Those Feet

Just like the rest of your body, your feet deserve a little TLC.

  • Stretch your arches and calves before and after activities.

  • Soak your feet in cool water if they feel sore.

  • Elevate them at the end of the day to reduce swelling.

Final Step: Know When to Say “Nope”

If your feet are aching, blistered, or look like they belong in a zombie movie, take a break. Your future self will thank you — and you'll avoid turning a fun weekend into a long week of limping.

Happy Memorial Day — may your food be grilled, your shoes be comfy, and your feet be blister-free!
